What are you harvesting in your life? What do you feel you have to put out into the world? And when you finally reach the point of putting it out there, what do you do?
The first step of these 12 was to tell the truth, to be honest with yourself: What are you passionate about? What must you have in your life to live? Each step you’ve taken in this process has brought you closer to this point now, where you’re able to sit back, look at the results of the creative journey and identify the product of your work.
Through all 12 steps you have evolved. The process of creating something in the world is the process of personal development. What you create outside you creates you within. It is the process of personal alchemy.
This post is #12 in a series of 12 which takes you through the 12 stages of the creative process as I describe it in my book, The Wheel Of Creativity: Taking Your Place in the Adventure Of Life.
Step 12: Set it free.
The 12th step in the creative journey is to set the new thing free. Station 12 in the Wheel of Creativity is Harvest. Here you make the cut to bring in the new crop and make it useful, to feed the hunger you started with 12 steps ago and the hunger of the world around you.
This is the place where you finally stop working on your new work. You say, “It is finished.” You release it into the marketplace. You send it out in the world to serve its purpose.
Sometimes I talk about this station as putting the new thing in the language of the tribe. In order for this thing you’ve made to achieve its aim, it has to be accessible to someone. The products you’ve created from your own innermost being must connect to the needs of the people so they can recognize it. And then you enter a new creative process, which might be marketing your work or it might be a new product altogether.
We are always creating. Whether it’s a new product that solves our problem, a work of art that expresses our response to the world, or a reaction in or to those around us, our existence is creative.
